Pyraflux-01

What is Pyraflux - 01?

Pyraflux-01 was the first hybrid engine in Bangladesh developed by AERD and successfully tested on 23rd September 2023. Before we share the details of this project, it is necessary to achieve a basic understanding of hybrid rocket engines and their importance in rocketry.

What is a hybrid rocket engine, and why is it important?

Hybrid rocket engines are rocket propulsion systems in which the oxidizer and fuel are stored in two different states. This system allows for greater safety as the liquid/gaseous oxidizer is injected across the fuel grain and so they never intermingle accidentally. Hybrid rocket systems are also thought to be environmentally friendly and low-cost. The fuel also is easy to store and transport as it is not volatile.

In Pyroflux-01 we used gaseous oxygen as our oxidizer and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) as our fuel. We had a chamber pressure of 10 BarA with thrust around 100N with a specific impulse of 200s. Pyraflux-1 is a vital component of our rocket, allowing us to perform research which were presented at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) VII Student Conference and awarded 2nd place in its category.
